Eifel National Park

The first national park in NRW
The goal of national parks is to make large undisturbed natural processes possible. For this reason, they represent the highest and strictest category of conservation.
Currently, 13 of these large protection areas are registered in the Federal Republic of Germany. The plans for the 14th national park are currently being prepared in North Rhine-Westphalia. The first national park in North Rhine-Westphalia will be created in the Eifel in the area of the communities of Schleiden, Monschau, Simmerath, Nideggen, and Heimbach. The approximately 9,000 ha (90 km²) area includes the former Vogelsang military training grounds and the extended neighboring forested areas of Kermeter, Hetzinger Wald, Dedenborn, and Wahlerscheid. Only public (federal and state) areas are now included in the borders.
The conservation suitability of the area as a national park was investigated and determined by the LÖBF (Landesanstalt für Ökologie, Bodenordnung und Forsten des Landes NRW) at the request of the MUNLV NRW (Ministerium für Umwelt und Naturschutz, Landwirtschaft und Verbraucherschutz).
